Humanitarian Operations Donny S. Vaiau 16 November 2016 Abstract Humanitarian aid is the â€Å"material and logistic assistance to people in need. It is usually short-term help until the long-term help by government and other institutions replaces it. Among the people in need are the homeless, refugees, victims of natural disasters, wars and famines. The primary purpose of humanitarian aid is to save lives, reduce suffering and respect to human dignity† (Wikipedia, 2016). The U.S. Army has served at home and abroad, responding with humanitarian aid. Natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes and floods and man-made disasters such as war and terrorist attacks keep humanitarian operations and response, an important part of military training. This paper explores the U.S. Army’s response in several humanitarian aid missions. Humanitarian Operations The U.S. Army Active, Reserves and National Guardsmen have responded to several natural disasters on U.S. soil in recent history. The U.S. Army’s need for response depends on the extent of damage, potential casualties and when the state or county has exhausted all local emergency response. One of the most important basic human needs is access to safe drinking water after a natural disaster hits. Hurricanes, earthquakes, or tsunamis can flood areas, compromise sewage systems and disable systems that provide safe drinking water to areas affected by these natural disasters.
